Please join us during one of the three Drop-In Design sessions planned for the Temple City Traffic Calming project. During these 90 minute sessions you will work one-on-one or in small groups with the design team in laying out concept plans for the Traffic Calming Focus Areas. Feel free drop in to just to check on our progress. No formal presentation will be made; therefore, participation in all three sessions is not necessary.

Maps, markers, photos and other project data will be available for your use. If you have specific concern and feel that a meeting in the field would be beneficial, please contact Dawn Wilson (dwilson@rbf.com) to schedule a time and location to meet on Tuesday, April 24th. We look forward to seeing you then!
What is Traffic Calming?
Traffic calming is the practice of slowing down traffic or reducing traffic volume by changing the design, size or character of a roadway or intersection. Effective implementation of traffic calming can reduce traffic accidents, improve safety for pedestrians and other non-motorists, increase opportunity for landscape and streetscape, and improve quality of life on residential streets.

The first step toward effective traffic calming is identifying the cause of neighborhood traffic concerns and determine feasible traffic calming solutions. In some cases, implementing traffic calming devices may not be the appropriate solution. There is no simple solution that will address all neighborhood concerns. Identifying the appropriate solution that will be accepted by a neighborhood takes a collaborative effort on the part of the residents and the City.

Several steps must be taken to ensure that the traffic calming devices selected for a neighborhood will be supported by both the residents and City staff. The City is in the process of establishing guidelines for implementing traffic calming in Temple City and identifying appropriate tools to slow down traffic or reduce traffic volumes on neighborhood streets.
What is the Traffic Calming Study and Master Plan?
Over the next six months, the City will be meeting with the community and collecting information about speed, pedestrian volume, bicycle volume and accidents throughout the City. This information will be used to identify intersections and corridors that would benefit from traffic calming. As a result of the analysis, Traffic Calming corridors will be developed.

The City is in the process of developing a comprehensive toolbox of traffic calming options that can be installed in the City. Tools will be classified as either a speed or volume measure. Benefits, challenges and effectiveness will be provided in the toolbox along with the design and implementation features associated with each device.

The Master Plan document will match the traffic calming tools with the Traffic Calming corridors and assess the overall benefit of traffic calming implementation. Concept level maps will be developed that illustrate the locations of the recommended traffic calming devices, cost for implementation and estimated speed or volume reductions for the study corridors.
How can you get involved?
In November 2011 and March 2012, the City will be conducting workshops to talk about traffic calming in your community. Each workshop will provide different levels of input:
  • Workshop #1: November 10, 2011 – Learn about traffic calming and the types of traffic calming in the City’s toolbox. Discuss what areas of the City would benefit most from traffic calming and share your thoughts for your community.
  • Workshop #2: March 2012 – Learn which areas are identified as Traffic Calming corridors and what devices are being recommended. Share your thoughts and ideas on the overall Master Plan.
  • Stakeholder Meetings: April 24th 2012 – Drop-in Design Sessions will be conducted throughout the day. Come by and share your idears or just check in on our progress. you can submit your comment on this website or at the Drop-in Session.
